COVID-19 in Papua New Guinea Soars Drastically, Border Residents Urged to Be Alert

The transmission of COVID-19 in Papua New Guinea has reportedly increased significantly.

Despite the closure of Skouw Cross-Border Post (PLBN) for the crossing of people and goods, the Deputy Governor still reminded residents living in the border areas to be vigilant and not to travel to Papua New Guinea.

"I ask the community for the time being not to (travel to PNG), let alone pass through it traditionally because of high transmission of COVID in PNG.

"So, we should take care of ourselves better, so as not to get infected and bring the disease to others," said Deputy Governor, Thursday (15/4/2021) in Jayapura.

Previously, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin asked residents who live or border directly with Papua New Guinea, to be careful and alert to the potential transmission of COVID-19.

He said the transmission of COVID in Papua New Guinea was so extreme that border residents were asked not to make the crossing traditionally, despite urgent needs.

"Papua New Guinea is rising high (Covid transmission). So, we should be careful if you cannot attack often (to Papua New Guinea) because it is dangerous to get the virus, then enter and infect all Papuans".

"Just like the first time Corona entered Papua which of course from outside the region," he said.

He also called on the provincial government as well as relevant authorities in the border areas to be able to increase surveillance. So that the transmission of COVID from Papua New Guinea, can be prevented.
